I wanted a space to journal some thoughts about anime I've been watching, so here goes! (SPOILERS AHEAD.)
Paranoia Agent | 16JAN25 - 17JAN25 | - 3.5/10. I cannot stand pretentious 'ARG'-style plots. If I have to navigate interviews and Reddit comments to comprehend what the fucking point was, you have failed in making something of significance- let alone of any worthwhile entertainment value. It just felt pointless. All of this mystery for it to be about a dog dying? And it serving as some deep, meaningful allegory for how the Japanese post-WW2 wou- my God, just stop. There is some value here, both artistic and with some specific episodes in mind- but I would take someone loving this as a sign of poor taste. Would I recommend this? Of course not! Of course not! And then...
Afro Samurai: Resurrection | 16JAN25 | - 3/10. Boring, pointless, and lame. Yawn. The show wasn't good either, from what I remember. What a waste, seriously. Some decent action scenes, one or two interestingly written moments...with no payoff. It also sort of requires you watch the series as it fails to give much context. If Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust wrote a strong/silent character the correct way, then this movie shows you how bad it can be butchered. A lack of diagloue doesn't immediately suggest brilliance.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust | 14JAN25 | - 7.5/10. Great! Decently thought provoking. Imagine sitting down and watching the original; you study it, make improvements, and totally do it justice. I'm reminded of Cowboy Bebop in the way it's formatted. The genre 'western' also comes to mind. I enjoyed the set pieces and the handling of Dunpeal as a main character. Thinking about it, it's impressive how much story is told and how much of his character shines through with such few words.
Vampire Hunter D | 14JAN25 | - Not bad. 5/10. A classic almost...fantasy? Tale. A traditional fantasy/horror princess story in almost a fairy tale format. Nice.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection | SUMMER 25 | - 5.5/10. Decent, not great. Sort of samey with what happens in the main story. Though, watching Lelouch come back from death/near death just...doesn't get old...
Code Geass | SUMMER 25 | - Seriously brilliant. Not perfect, but deserving of 10/10. I stupidly waited to write about this, as I had seen it around July of 2025...sigh.
Fate/Extra: Last Encore | SUMMER 25 | - 6.5/10. Enjoyed this! Pacing issues. Nero's relationship with HAKUNO leaves...some...to be desired. It's solid, though!
Fate/Zero | SUMMER 25 | - 8/10. Excellent! Some issues to be noted insofar as pacing is concerned, and the handling of Saber's relationship with Kuritsugu, but damn. Love this.
Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel - I, II, & III | SUMMER 25 | - They're like...a 4/10 combined...just a mess, from what I remember. (Trying to get an in-order review of anime I watched this last summer [writing in January 2026]). CRAZY hype fight from Kirei in II, I believe. So damn good. I also hate the rape/SA trope that's used in Jap media...
Fate/Stay Night (2006) | SUMMER 25 | - SO much better. A 7/10 romance anime that I enjoyed. Certainly some writing issues to be noted but the dialogue and relationship between Shirou and Saber was surpisingly well-handled.
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014) | SUMMER 25 | - A horribly written, clumsy piece of garbage. This is a 4/10 and that's only owed to it being a bit entertaining as the plot twists and turns without reason.
Cowboy Bebop (1998) | SUMMER 25 | - This easily justifies a second watch. The theme of one's past was felt throughout and very intelligently played. Call it...7.5/10? To be clear, Bebop does have issues. Pacing slows down, and the plot gets distracted. I also feel this way about Samurai Champloo, another anime by Watanabe. But don't let that stop you from watching, as some hipsters might imply.
Girls' Last Tour | SUMMER 24 | - Refer to my 'Thoughts on Girls Last Tour.' The anime is a 3/10.
